Aggreko 40 MW of gas-powered
generation to fulfill Tanzania hydropower shortfall
Power shortages in Tanzania as a result of extended drought
Aggreko deliver 40MW of gas power ten days ahead of
schedule
Prompt power delivery helps to sustain economic growth in the
country
Aggreko plc, the world leader in
the provision of temporary power and temperature control services,
is supplying Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) 40 MW of
gas-powered generation. The contract for power supply was awarded
to Aggreko and is part of emergency measures being implemented to
avert a prolonged shortage of electricity supply resulting from an
extended drought.
Aggreko designed and supplied a
full turnkey gas power solution to TANESCO, including equipment
mobilization, installation, operation, servicing and maintenance of
the project. The equipment, part of Aggreko’s fleet of gas powered
generators, was supplied with transformers, switchboards and a
fully stocked onsite store with all spares and consumables required
for the 2 year project duration.
TANESCO, the company responsible
for generating and distributing electricity to customers in
Tanzania and Zanzibar, awarded the contract to Aggreko due to its
ability to achieve the delivery deadline and its commitment to
provide 24-hour support service.
Aggreko supplied the Gas Power
solution to TANESCO in two phases. Generators were transported from
Aggreko International’s headquarters in Jebel Ali, UAE for phase
one which became operational on October 18th 2006. Equipment for
the second phase was airlifted to the site from Aggreko’s holding
facility in Europe due to the urgent need of power locally. This
enabled Aggreko to supply the full 40MW on December 7th, 10 days
earlier than stated in the Emergency Supply Agreement with TANESCO.
Aggreko’s own in house experienced technicians and engineers
installed the project in accordance to the ISO 9001:2000 audited
procedures and quality standards to ensure safety and reliability.
The gas supply for the project is being supplied by the Songo Songo
gas field offshore Tanzania.
“Aggreko has diligently worked with
TANESCO to ensure that both Phase 1 & Phase 2 were operational
ahead of the commitment made by His Excellency the President to the
people of Tanzania. This demonstrates the company’s flexibility and
ability to rapidly respond to the client’s needs”, said Mr. Idris
Rashidi, Managing Director, TANESCO.
“The contract with Aggreko will assist the government of Tanzania
to re-establish economic activities that were affected by the
shortage of electricity. Based on Aggreko’s tailor-made solution
and previous track record, we are confident that they will continue
to provide reliable power for us,” Mr. Rashidi added.
Patrick O’ Driscoll, Director Gas
Power, Aggreko said, "Aggreko have made a major investment in
making rental Gas Power solutions available to the market. Meeting
our clients needs to take advantage of natural gas as an
alternative fuel to diesel represents an extension of Aggreko’s
existing range of power rental service.”
