Associated petroleum gas to power 2 MW, Romania 


OMV Petrom is the largest oil and gas group in southern-eastern Europe, with activities in exploration and production, gas and power, and refining and marketing. The group has consolidated its position on the oil market in south-eastern Europe following a far-reaching modernisation and efficiency increase process, with investments of EUR 10 billion in the last nine years.

During the oil extraction process, associated petroleum gas is also obtained. One of the options is to use high efficiency gas piston engines within Romanian oil fields and make use of the resulted associated gas in order to improve the company’s ecological footprint by minimising greenhouse gas emissions and better exploit available energy sources. The project helps to secure the oil production in mature-field environment and reduce operating cost.

Vața site, within Argeş County, was one of these oil fields.


In order to utilise the associated gas energy at Vaţa site and obtain electrical energy, instead of installing new facilities for gas treatment and transportation, the selected approach was to make use of a gas treatment skid to help power the Aggreko 1375 kVA QSK Cummins engines and feed the resulted power into the national power grid.

Aggreko offered this type of turn-key solution, assuming responsibility for permissions, construction, implementing gas and electrical connections, engineering, operating, and maintaining these facilities on a long term basis.

The solution included SCADA monitoring of equipment, gas and electricity production output, as well operating and performing high quality maintenance on the equipment. All this was performed whilst adhering to the highest QHSE standards in the field.
