Banro Corporation planned to develop the Twangiza gold deposit in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Twangiza is located in a remote part of eastern DRC, away from suitable power infrastructure.
The supply of sufficient power to the site provided an operational challenge that needed to be addressed before any development could take place. With good annual rainfall and a suitable topography the initial plan was to power the site through the installation of a hydropower system. However, due to the level of investment required to install such a large piece of infrastructure, another solution to the power needs of Twangiza was examined.
Following initial discussions on the possibilities of rental power, Aggreko provided a scalable, full baseload power supply solution which could grow in capacity as the requirements of the project developed.
Being a greenfield project, Aggreko supplied an initial 500 kVA generator to provide camp power, which was followed by an additional 1250 kVA unit for welding and construction work. Over the course of eight months and in line with the growing power demands of the project, the power supplied by Aggreko grew from the initial 500 kVA to 8 MW of power to meet the needs of the mine at full production.
Aggreko have significant experience in providing power solutions to the worldwide mining industry and have a well-established track record of supplying power to mining operations throughout Africa.
As the Twangiza site is located in a relatively remote part of the continent, it was vital that the provision of power could not only be guaranteed, but also that the supplier had actual prior experience working in countries such as the DRC.
We chose to work with Aggreko as they had a proven track record across Africa and they understood the power requirements we needed during each phase as the mine developed. By using a specialised rental power provider such as Aggreko, it allowed us to focus on our core activities, secure in the knowledge our power supply was in expert hands.
