6th August 2014: Houston – Aggreko, a global leader in temporary power generation, temperature control and oil-free compressed air solutions, announced it provided large-scale power generation and climate control for the 2014 PGA Championship, that took place August 4-10 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, KY.
The Aggreko event team designed a power and cooling solution that will allow the anticipated 45,000 golf fans per day to enjoy the event in safety and comfort, while maintaining the integrity and beauty of the surroundings. The sprawling Valhalla grounds, owned by The PGA of America, encompasses more than 400 acres dedicated to supporting large-scale tournaments. The Aggreko team worked closely with the PGA and the local utility to develop a cost-effective solution that took into account the various sizes of temporary facilities, from the merchandising tent and corporate chalets to the security and media compound. The unique design incorporated both temporary power and electricity from the local utility to create a more efficient solution, resulting in significant cost and fuel savings.
The event utilizes specialized cooling and power equipment built specifically for golf tournaments and significant spectator events. It includes uninterruptible generators operating in parallel - which provide cleaner, quieter and more convenient temporary power than other commonly used generator sets. The cooling system also incorporates chillers and custom-built tent air conditioners.
Powering an event of this magnitude requires a range of Aggreko equipment and manpower, including:
- More than 9 MW of power generators
- 3,000 tons of cooling equipment
- Approximately 35 miles of cable
- A crew of 15 Aggreko technicians for installation and operation
“Designing power and cooling solutions for high-profile events of this nature requires strong safety practices and a level of project management experience that is second to none,” said Todd Fasano, Event Services Project Manager, Aggreko North America. “We are honored to be the selected provider of the PGA Championship for the eighth year and look forward to many more opportunities with them in the future.”
