26 June 2013: HOUSTON, TX – Aggreko, the global leader in power generation and temperature control solutions, was recently recognised as Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology’s (OSUIT) Business Partner of the Year due to the success of its SelecTech Program, currently part of the school’s curriculum. The recognition was made public at the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education Business Partnership Excellence Award ceremony.
Administered by The Heavy Equipment and Vehicle Institute at Oklahoma State University-Okmulgee, the Aggreko SelecTech Accelerated Career Program provides a unique forum where students learn in class and are also given the opportunity to apply their skills during a series of hands-on experiences. Students work in a variety of jobsite environments, with internships at some of Aggreko’s 50-plus North American service centers.
The two-year, six-semester course covers the latest developments in diesel engine systems, engine electronic systems, power generation systems, electric motors and motor controls, electrical distribution synchronization and load sharing, diagnostic procedures, compressed air basics and event-specific equipment. In addition to the technical curriculum, the course includes modules in math, technical writing, psychology, U.S. history and government, and business, as well as develops the students' aptitude for the effective communication of ideas, and interpersonal skills.
“From the first moment Aggreko SelecTech students begin their studies, they are preparing for an accelerated and challenging career ahead,” said Devin Murphy, Technician Program Manager, Aggreko North America. “We are delighted to have received the Business of the Year award from OSUIT and continue to help cultivate SelecTech students to not only become skilled technicians, but future leaders as well.”
The course also covers the real-life aspects of Aggreko’s business – from assisting with disaster relief operations to supporting unconventional gas shale plays and providing power and cooling services for special events, including internationally known golf tournaments and music concerts. Students travel at least 75-80% of the time — maximizing their exposure to Aggreko, while providing them a well-rounded learning experience.
"Effective partnering with industry leaders is an essential part of our success at OSUIT," said Anita Gordy-Watkins, vice president of Institutional Advancement. "They not only provide financial support to our students through scholarships and internships but also resources to the institution and crucial insight to develop our curriculum."
Upon completion of the program, SelecTech graduates receive an Associate in Applied Science degree with a focus on diesel and heavy equipment. Graduates also have the opportunity to pursue and accept full-time employment with Aggreko.
“Participation has nearly tripled in three years, and we’d like to see up to 50 students by 2017,” said Murphy. “The Aggreko SelecTech program continues to grow in the U.S. and we’ll be opening international locations in the future.”
