Powering flood cleanup with the grid downIn October 2012, the Siphon Tunnel project, a $250m development to put a new water siphon in place between Brooklyn and Staten Island, was going well. Then Hurricane Sandy happened. The Category 1 storm slammed the project’s work site and breached its flood defences, filling the partially-excavated 460m tunnel with salt water, damaging equipment and power supply.
The financial loss was huge and growing every day. It was vital to secure the site as soon as possible to fix the damage and start work again. But with the local power station flooded, there was no grid power to do it. The team needed to find another way to power the cleanup – fast.

We teamed up with Hunter Roberts Construction Group to design and deliver a complete alternative power source, including two 1,300 kW natural gas generators as prime power, a third as backup, along with all the related transformers and distribution equipment.

Acting fast, we were able to get reliable power to the site as soon as the storm hit, delivering 3.9 MW of reliable emergency power. The system would go on to save the project around $125,000 a month over the next two years.
