While we help our customers navigate the energy transition and reduce energy consumption, we are also reducing our environmental impact throughout our facilities and activities.

With the aim of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030, we are accelerating measures in the UK, and taking these proven practices to everything we do in more than 80 countries.

We are continuously monitoring our environmental impact

#1 Monitoring energy efficiency in our premises

We are diligently monitoring energy consumption, uncovering opportunities to behave more sustainably. This includes optimising our heating and cooling systems, retrofitting facilities with low-energy LED lighting and introducing automated lighting controls.

In Dumbarton, Scotland, our production facility has been upgraded to create a Future Energy Hub, using smart energy storage systems and LED lighting

#2 Reviewing energy efficiency in transportation

We are working towards monitoring emissions from the transportation of our equipment around the world. We work closely with our logistics partners, adopting energy-efficient practices at every stage.

Our people are mindful of the environmental impact when planning routes. Wherever possible, we choose movement by sea and rail rather than road or air. We are also starting to transition our own vehicle fleet to electric or hybrid wherever possible.

#3 Increasing the efficiency of our operations

With the creation of our Future Energy Hub at Dumbarton, we have consolidated our production facility and main service and repair centre and depot in Scotland – reducing our footprint from three sites to one site. You can find out more about our Future Energy Hub here.

We are currently reviewing other sites where similar increases in efficiency could be achieved.

We are rapidly adopting emission reduction strategies

#1 Transitioning electricity to renewable energy sources

We are transitioning our electricity supply to renewable energy wherever possible.

We are already well on this journey, with 95% of our UK facilities already operating using renewable energy sources.

#2 Rethinking business travel

Even before the pandemic, we were already working hard to optimise our business travel. We have invested in technology to help people work across the world without the need to travel, significantly reducing our carbon impact.

At the same time, we are encouraging people to make more sustainable choices when they do need to travel.

#3 Reducing equipment emissions

One of the ways we are reducing equipment emissions is by optimising our testing and maintenance regime.

We are already transitioning our testing programme to replace diesel with low-emission Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO). At our Future Energy Hub, we are also exporting surplus power from production tests to the national grid, repurposing energy that would otherwise be wasted.

#4 Reducing waste to landfill

To mitigate our environmental impact, we have adopted three core principles: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. These are brought to life through a wide range of initiatives, from segregating waste in our offices to recycling used oil from our fleet so that it can be reused.

In 2020 alone, our North America business recycled 575,844 litres (126,668 gallons) of used oil. We are also working closely with our suppliers to remove plastic packaging or adopt recycled plastic where necessary.

We are embedding sustainability across our supply chain

We know we cannot make the change to a sustainable future alone. That is why a key part of our strategy for reducing environmental impact involves encouraging and educating our supply chain partners.

We are already working closely with our OEM partners to develop products that improve the efficiency of our fleet. We are also working closely with our supply chain partners to identify new technologies that will provide cleaner energy for our customers in a way that is scalable, reliable and economically viable.

We are also developing a programme to assess the sustainability practices adopted by our partners, encouraging positive change throughout the whole value chain.
