The Challenge

Provide cooling to increase productivity

The Dubai Metro construction project was awarded to Dubai Rapid Link Consortium: Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Mitsubishi Corporation for the rail work and for the civil work the Japan Turkey Metro Joint Venture consisting of Obayashi Corporation, Kajima Corporation and Yapı Merkezi. The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) while in operation becomes extremely hot and if not cooled the drill head begins to erode affecting the drilling process.

The Solution

Aggreko technicians worked along with the contractors and developed a specially designed chiller system that recycled the hot water from the TBM into cold water to cool the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). 600 kW water cooled chillers were used to ensure that the TBM machine worked continuously to excavate the tunnels through a variety of different rock layers.

Providing the customer with a comprehensive cooling solution enabled them to carry out the tunnel excavation and completed the tunnel on time, as well as with the help of Aggreko radiator units we ensured that the workers working in the tunnel got clean and cool air providing them with humane working conditions.

After a site inspection and comprehensive assessment of our requirements, Aggreko developed a tailor made solution that would provide a comfortable working environment for the laborers who are working around the clock to meet the metro deadline
