The challenge
Avoid load shedding due to reduced capacity
The tiny islands of Antigua and Barbuda, nestled in the Caribbean, are home to a small population of permanent residents and a yearly influx of sun-seeking tourists. It goes without saying that electricity is crucial to keep these tourists happy and support the islands’ economy.
Unfortunately, the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) was on the brink of load shedding due to a fall in power output. Forced to operate at minimum capacity because of major maintenance work and other issues, APUA decided it was time to call us.

Boost in islands' capacity
Unusual voltage and frequency
The solution
A 10 MW power boost with an unusual setup
Within three weeks, we had shipped and installed a comprehensive 10 MW power package at Antigua’s Friars Hill Power Station. There was some complexity involved – the power station operates at an unusual 11 kV/60 Hz voltage and frequency combination, so we had to couple our generators with multi-tap transformers to match their set-up.
As well as generators, we also supplied step-up transformers, switchgear, fuel tanks and cables. Our rapid response team had it all commissioned before you could say “Caribbean getaway”.

The impact
25% capacity increase and no load shedding
Tourists, residents and APUA could relax. With our power package in place, there was now enough electricity for all the islands’ needs. In fact, we boosted capacity by 25%.
Our rapid response was greatly appreciated by APUA. It meant they could concentrate on major maintenance work on their own equipment and get their own generation system back up to full capacity as quickly as possible, without having to worry about load shedding.
“Reliable power is essential for tourism, the backbone of Antigua and Barbuda’s economy. We acted fast to boost their capacity during a time of crisis.”
