Provide temporary power for commissioning of a wind farm
The tricky bit for any wind farm out on the ocean is converting the offshore AC energy to onshore DC energy without losing too much in the process. BorWin’s beta High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) convertor platform – which was used to transform 800 MW of power from the wind farm and plug it directly into the grid – was ready to go but needed testing before the green light was given.
Their partner, Petrovac, needed a temporary power source for support and maintenance while the platform was being tested. Knowing we had partnered with wind farms since they first appeared on the scene, they invited us onto the platform.

Power package tailored for offshore life
We had a proven track record in the planning and delivery of the same kind of offshore package in the UK. We came on board and installed a 1250 kVA DNV generator, firefighting system and additional fuel tank, allowing Petrofac the freedom to go about their business of providing services and maintenance on the platform during commissioning.
We also provided technical advice for the planning, delivery, commissioning and servicing of the generator according to the Det Norske Veritas (DNV) offshore conditions.

Under challenging offshore conditions, we made a significant contribution to the success of the Warnemünde wind farm that now has transmission losses of less than four percent and meets the power demands of some 800,000 households. It is one of the many ways we support renewable energies across the globe.
