Bridging a power gap to keep production on track
For any oil and gas operator in a remote region, a reliable power supply during field development is essential. Operators usually have three options - obtain a power supply from local power lines, construct its own connection and substation or build their own power plant based on diesel and/ or gas generators.
In remote areas, connection to the closest grid requires significant investment that is often comparable to the capex costs of building an on-site power plant. In addition, if a connection to the grid is feasible then operators sometimes choose to find immediate solution’s to power up their operations. This is while permits, land acquisition, land lease for power lines and subsequent construction of permanent infrastructure is all ongoing.
In January 2017 our customer turned to Aggreko to provide an immediate solution to their power requirements and ‘bridge the gap’ until a substation could be completed and connected to the grid.

Aggreko worked with the customers’ engineering team and designed, supplied and commissioned six power packages, consisting of 19 gas generators each with a unit capacity of 1375 kVA, 41 diesel generators with a unit capacity of 1250 kVA and 14 x 6300 kVA transformers. Our experts completed the entire design, mobilisation, installation and precommission phases in five weeks - which was costeffective for the customer too.
Geographically these projects can also be logistically tough for onward selling and distribution of gas, as they are set aside from pipeline infrastructure. By By working closely with the customers’ engineers Aggreko immediately provided energy security and reduced the energy deficit at the field. We also created conditions to cover the consumption growth of the next phases and by utilising channelling this gas back into power production, the free fuel meets legislation requirements. Using the Associated Petroleum Gas (APG) in this way, meant the customer did not have to worry about potential fines that could be incurred from flaring this excess gas.
By the end of the year the customer was so happy with the solution that they decided to proceed ahead of schedule with further field development and requested a further two packages taking the total power being supplied to 83 MVA rather than waiting as planned for the grid connection.
