Providing temporary power for Africa’s largest wind farm
Lake Turkana Wind Park (LTWP) is Africa’s largest wind farm. It has 365 850 kW turbines, giving a total output of 310 MW – that’s 15 percent of Kenya’s total installed capacity. The site should get power from the grid via a 400km transmission line – but it was a year behind schedule.
LTWP needed to demonstrate the theoretical output of its site to qualify for deemed
payments as part of a power purchase agreement it had with Kenya Power. That meant recording the wind-speed data from each of the 365 turbines as they
came on line. And they needed to do it without delay.

When time is of the essence, the quickest way to get going is by air. Our plan involved
three 1250 kVA generators, a 3 MVA loadbank, a transformer and all high voltage cabling, flown in by cargo plane from our depot in Dubai. LTWP is a large remote site – 40,000 acres – so we put together a detailed layout with varying cable lengths, and a dedicated team to install it all.
And six of our technical and engineering experts stayed on-hand throughout, to ensure the plan was implemented smoothly and operated according to our exacting standards

LTWP reaps the rewards of successful implementation
Our package helped LTWP successfully demonstrate the output of hundreds of wind turbines, despite being spread over a huge area.
This meant the company could claim its deemed payments from Kenya Power as detailed in its agreement.
LTWP was also able to meet the financial milestones set by the project lenders and
achieve its key dates to complete the build.
