Extra power to commission the mine on time
What happens when your site is ready but power isn't? This was the problem for Xstrata's latest open-cut coal mine in the Hunter Region of New South Wales. During construction, grid connection fell behind schedule, and generators they'd relied on so far couldn't supply enough power to commission the mine on time. With delivery contracts already in place, they needed extra power as soon as possible to avoid missing crucial deadlines.

Creating a scalable, temporary power plant
We realised that while extra power was the top priority, the mine would also need a much bigger power supply later on. Why not solve both problems together? Instead of just bringing in a few more generators, we brought all the existing power sources together to create one central, onsite power station.
The beauty of this was that we could add to it over time, so as the mine grew, the power station would too. It was fast, but also future-proof. And reliable – our technical team was on hand to operate the power plant 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with extra support from the nearby Aggreko depot in Newcastle.

Thanks to the new onsite power station the mine not only opened on time, but cut power costs as well. By centralising control of the power supply, the onsite team could match supply to demand, so the mine had plenty of power at peak times, but saved money when the site was less active. The result was a huge leap in fuel efficiency across the business.
