Methane doesn’t have to go to waste. It can be used for power.

Reducing methane emissions by 45% by 2030 is critical for limiting global heating to 1.5°C.

Two key sources of methane-related emissions come from landfill sites as well as gas flaring in oil and gas operations.  

According to the EPA, the methane emissions from landfills in 2019 were approximately equivalent to the greenhouse gas emissions from more than 21.6 million passenger vehicles driven for one year—or the CO2 emissions from nearly 12 million homes. And globally, 145 billion cubic metres of natural gas is wasted through flaring – the burning of excess gas – each year, producing over 1bn tonnes of methane.

But we can repurpose methane and actually use it to power operations. In fact, if all flared gas was turned into power-generating fuel it could generate roughly 750 billion kWh of electricity a year. Similarly, we can trap methane emissions from landfill sites and feed it to biogas plants to generate power
