WHAT IS AGGREKO AND WHAT CAN IT DO FOR UTILITY CUSTOMERS?

Aggreko is the leading global supplier of temporary and modular power generation, supporting any market where there is a requirement for a reliable, fast track bridging solution. Aggreko has been supporting for decades utilities sector in its entire value chain : Generation, Transmission & Distribution.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN PAIN POINTS THAT YOUR CUSTOMERS ARE FACING?

In a grid system the balance of supply and demand is critical and represents the main concern : On the generation side, capacity may often be reduced due to a break down or unplanned maintenance, or because seasonal peak demand cannot be met with existing installed capacity. The gap is then covered by Aggreko until a permanent solution is found and implemented. TSO’s (Transmission System Operators) and DSO’s (Distribution System Operators), even though sufficient power is available from one hand, may not be able through their systems, to pass the required energy down to their final customers simply because their grids have reached their maximum capacity.

These grid limitations can also be caused by break down or works on the power lines and sub-stations. Aggreko would then bridge the gap either at Hight Voltage level or Medium voltage level. In a more regular way, Aggreko supports on daily basis DSO’s across Europe, at Low Voltage Level, to power a block of houses or a small office /industrial plot.

ANY NEW PRODUCTS OR SOLUTIONS COMING OUT THAT COULD BE INTERESTING FOR THE UTILITIES COMMUNITY?

There are quite a few indeed. On the regulatory aspect, let’s welcome the Stage V engines in our fleet as these comply with the latest emissions standards. Part of our fleet is also compliant with HVO 100 ( also called bio diesel). As conventional Diesel will gradually decline, our new Gas Engines may play a bigger role in the future. Last but not least our Batteries and our “Energy Storage as a Service” can help utilities stabilize their grids and limit renewables energy curtailment.

SEEMS LIKE EVERYTHING IS GREEN ORIENTED. WHAT CAN AGGREKO DO FOR THE UTILITIES SECTOR FROM AN ENERGY TRANSITION PERSPECTIVE?

We can help Utilities in several ways : During a power plant construction phase, especially wind farms, we are often demanded to energize their mini grids ( supplying power) and test the wind turbines ( with load bank). For aging, polluting and non-efficient generation power plant, we offer an ideal bridging solution that allow to shut down Coal or HFO fired plant and run instead with clean natural gas or bio fuels. Ultimately as described above we can supply storage batteries systems that in some cases can improve existing plant efficiency or/and limit renewables energy curtailment. Last but not least our CHP solution can provide to utilities and district heating operators both power and heating.

HOW DO YOU SEE THE UTILITIES MARKET IN THE FOLLOWING YEARS?

We can summarize it in just a single word : Decarbonization. As a consequence, the on-going renewables energy transition (we could also call it Revolution!), and the intermittency it creates, future energy systems will need become more flexible, modular and smart. Energy storage and virtual power plants will help to regulate and balance the supply and demand. Energy Regulatory Authorities will also promote energy auto producers, enabling them to sell their excess power to the grid or even remain off grid.
