Dubai, March 2009 - Aggreko, the global leader in provision of
temporary power and temperature control services, has been
awarded the contract to provide rental power and temperature
control to the International Rugby Board (IRB) Rugby World Cup
Sevens 2009, to be held in March in Dubai, UAE.
For the first time, the Rugby World
Cup Sevens tournament will be taking place in Dubai at The Sevens,
a purpose-built venue which has a total capacity of 50,000 per day.
The Sevens venue was inaugurated in November 2008, when it
successfully hosted the largest Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens
tournament to date. It has been built as a ‘flexible’ venue, which
means that it includes a permanent grandstand and has also been
designed to allow for expanded capacity using temporary facilities.
The permanent capacity of the grandstand is 5,000, while temporary
stands and the temporary power supply allow the capacity of the
stadium to be increased to 50,000 spectators for events such as the
World Cup Sevens.
Aggreko has worked closely with
tournament organisers to engineer, install and commission a 10.4MW
temporary power plant, which will provide additional base load
power, as well as back-up power supply. All large-scale sporting
events such as the World Cup require a back-up power supply in
order to ensure total power reliability. The IRB has recently
announced that the Rugby World Cup Sevens 2009 will surpass all
previous Sevens tournament broadcast records and will be screened
in 140 countries through 25 international broadcasters. The Aggreko
rental power package will ensure that the broadcast center at The
Sevens will have the power necessary to provide uninterrupted
coverage of the tournament.
In addition to the power package,
Aggreko will be providing temporary cooling for the VIP and
Corporate tents. A combination of chillers, air handlers and AC
units will be used, totalling 4,506kW of cooling.
Aggreko’s involvement in the Rugby
World Cup Sevens 2009 is not restricted to power and temperature
control: the company continues its sponsorship of the now familiar
Aggreko Dynamos, the cheerleading squad that encourages fans to
support their favourite teams during the event.
Phil Burns, Managing Director of
Aggreko Middle East, commented: “After the success of the Emirates
Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens in 2008, where Aggreko also provided
temporary power and temperature control to the tournament for the
ninth year in a row, we are pleased to continue working at The
Sevens venue for the Rugby World Cup Sevens. We take great pride in
being able to support large-scale events such as this, especially
by ensuring uninterrupted power for television broadcasting and
other functions.”
