The Challenge
There is a paradise island located in the Caribbean that boasts beautiful reefs, corals, and beaches with crystal-clear waters. This island is a popular destination for cruises and thousands of tourists throughout the year.
The island's energy utility faced various challenges in generating the necessary power to meet the population's demand. Daily power outages occurred frequently due to the inefficiency of the installed generator system.
This situation, in addition to affecting the quality of life of the island's residents and visiting tourists, caused significant damage to local electrical equipment. All of this had a major impact on the island's economy.
The Solution
It was crucial to start generating energy as soon as possible. To achieve this, we quickly mobilized the equipment and organized it optimally within a very limited space.
Initially, we installed a 40 MW power plant, which resolved the immediate issue of electricity supply on the island. Six months later, when Aggreko was generating approximately 25% of the island's energy, the client decided to request an additional 40 MW expansion, bringing the total installed capacity to 80 MW.
We managed to install the equipment in less than 2 months, meeting the client's expectations. Subsequently, the client requested another capacity expansion of 10 MW, increasing the total installed capacity to 90 MW. In the same year, some of the installed equipment began to be used as spinning reserve, ensuring that any changes in energy demand could be quickly addressed.
Once again, we adapted to our clients' needs, helping them overcome their challenges. More than just a service provider, Aggreko became an essential partner for the client, meeting the short installation timeframe for numerous pieces of equipment in a challenging space, offering the ability to adapt energy supply according to demand, and ensuring flexibility in contract duration and timing.
The Impact
With the support of the 90 MW of energy we provide to the island, it was possible to avoid power outages that would affect the local population and tourists.
Additionally, the generation cost was reduced thanks to the decrease in fuel consumption achieved by using more efficient equipment.
Both the residents and the tourism industry benefited from having a reliable energy system, with machines capable of generating power 24 hours a day and also operating according to demand.
