Accelerating transition

The first pillar of our sustainability framework is focused on accelerating the transition to net zero emissions.

We are reducing greenhouse gas emissions and local emissions from our customer solutions by promoting our Greener Upgrades. And we are doing the same in our own facilities and operations by becoming more efficient.

We are investing in sustainable energy solutions

Investing in our product fleet

We are investing in our product fleet, adding energy storage solutions and solar technology, engines that can run on alternative fuels, alongside highly-efficient gas engines and emissionised diesel generators (Stage V/T4F).

In 2021, we invested £80 million in lower-carbon products, helping customers to reduce emissions from their energy solutions.

Accelerating the transition to sustainable energy solutions

Diesel remains a vital energy source for many customers. But our teams of expert engineers are finding ways to integrate battery storage and renewables, where practical, to reduce customers’ fuel consumption. And as well as reducing fuel costs, these energy solutions are also lower-carbon, lower-emission, and highly efficient.

Our Greener Upgrades tool is helping customers to reduce the total cost of energy by reducing fuel consumption and thereby also reducing emissions.

We are also enabling customers to use renewable energy from the grid where available.

Our Energy Transition Solutions division is developing, owning and operating clean energy infrastructure in North America through long-term investment and partnerships. Our partnership with the Farmers Powering Communities solar initiative will deliver 500MW of community solar projects across the US.

Creating partnerships for alternative fuels

To reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our customer solutions, we work with partners to offer alternative fuels and services. We have already begun helping customers switch to lower-emission fuels, including alternative drop-in biofuels and gas.

Taking a data-driven approach to sustainability

With unparalleled access to data around energy demands and asset performance, we can continually adjust our systems to provide cost-effective, reliable, cleaner energy solutions.

Our Aggreko Remote Monitoring helps us optimise the performance of our assets to meet customers’ needs and their sustainability goals.

Investing in future technologies

We are continually investing in emerging technologies. Our goal is to identify and incorporate cleaner technology as soon as it becomes scalable, reliable and economically viable.

We have been working with our partner, CMB.TECH, to develop a 50kVA hydrogen generator which we are trialling with customers.

And we are keeping customers informed by sharing our knowledge of the energy transition, our technology investments, and the new technologies we are trialling.

Reducing the environmental impact of our facilities and operations

As we help customers navigate the energy transition and reduce their energy consumption, we are also applying that expertise to decarbonise our own facilities and operations.

Reducing equipment emissions

One of the ways we are reducing equipment emissions is by optimising our testing and maintenance regime to reduce the fuel we use to test our products. We are also switching to low-emission hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) for testing our products where this is practical.

The energy we produce from testing is also re-used wherever possible to provide energy to power our own facilities or to export the power to the grid. For example, at our Dumbarton site we are using the energy from our testing processes to power our manufacturing facility and local depot, and exporting surplus power to the national grid, so that no energy is wasted.

Monitoring energy efficiency in our premises

We are diligently monitoring energy consumption, uncovering opportunities to behave more sustainably. This includes optimising our heating and cooling systems, retrofitting facilities with low-energy LED lighting, introducing automated lighting controls, as well as installing solar and energy storage.

At our Dumbarton site in Scotland, our production facility is using smart energy storage systems and LED lighting. We are also installing solar panels to reduce our reliance on grid power.

Switching to renewable sources of electricity

We are transitioning our electricity supply to renewable energy wherever possible.
All our UK facilities already use renewable energy sources, and we have plans to switch other facilities to renewable energy sources where practical, supported by renewable energy certificates where available.

Reviewing energy efficiency in transportation

We monitor the emissions we generate when we transport our equipment within and between countries, and we are making cleaner choices wherever possible. This includes transitioning our own vehicle fleet to electric or hybrid where that is practical, and working closely with our logistics partners to be as energy-efficient as possible.
Wherever possible, we move equipment by sea and rail rather than road or air.

Rethinking business travel

Even before the pandemic, we were already working hard to optimise our business travel. We have invested in technology to help colleagues work together around the world without needing to travel, which significantly reduces our carbon impact.

At the same time, we are encouraging people to make more sustainable choices when they do need to travel.

Reducing waste to landfill

To mitigate our environmental impact, we have adopted three core principles: reduce, reuse, recycle. These are brought to life through a wide range of initiatives, including: segregating waste in our offices; recycling used oil from our fleet so that it can be reused; and refurbishing our products to extend their life and ultimately reduce waste.

Embedding sustainability across our supply chain

We know we cannot make the change to a sustainable future alone. That is why a key part of our strategy for reducing our environmental impact involves our supply chain partners.

We work closely with our OEM partners to develop products that improve the efficiency of our fleet. And we work closely with our supply chain partners to identify new technologies that will provide cleaner energy for customers in a way that is scalable, reliable and economically viable.

We are also developing a programme to assess the sustainability practices adopted by our partners, encouraging positive change throughout the whole value chain.
