The challenge

Find efficient, dependable power solution for critical comms tower

A communications tower on site was relied on by more than 6000 people to provide critical radio information, including the emergency services.

The site location was remote – and huge too, approximately 400 football pitches.

On site, there were issues with the power supply, putting vital communications at risk. A large, 200 kVA generator was being tasked with the delivery of energy, but the generator was too big for what was needed. That meant it was running at a lighter load and therefore – burning far more fuel than is necessary.

The site also contained backup generators too, but this was excessive for what the comms tower required. The client wanted an energy supply that fitted the demands of the site – and a power partner that would gauge the perfect solution.

The Solution

Smaller generator and smart battery unit offers reliability, resiliency and reductions in fuel burn, emissions and cost

Our experts examined the site and the telemetry, which indicated that it was possible to significantly reduce the generator size by 140 kVA, down to 60 kVA. This would be aided by a battery unit to increase resiliency to the supply.

The battery unit could have provided the required energy on its own and the presence of two possible power sources only added to the robustness of our solution.

With our ARM (Aggreko Remote Monitoring) service, we also ensured that the energy supply and the equipment efficiency would be maintained to constant high standards.

The Impact

Emissions reduced by 80% per week and cost savings driven by less fuel consumption

The impact of our power was two-fold.

Firstly, because of the reduced generator size and the battery unit further reducing consumption – fuel burn was reduced by 80%, which greatly reduces emissions and cost.

Secondly, with our engineers keeping a close eye on operations, this also shrunk the demand for servicing intervals. That meant the power could continue to run unabated.

This has led to a reduction of traffic into and out of the site, further enhancing the emissions reductions that our solution delivers.

And above all, this resulted in the continuation of critical radio communications.
