Temporary cooling system keeps hospital open

Client: Hospital and research facility

Location: Galveston, Texas, USA

Sectors: Contracting

The challenge

Deliver a hospital cooling system in 48 hours

A large hospital in Galveston, Texas, had lost one of its chiller motors. In the heat of a Texan summer, where daily temperatures push above the 90°F (32°C) mark, the remaining chiller was struggling to keep up with demand. The hospital faced the unpleasant prospect of having to shut down within 48 hours. But before it did, they called us to see if there was something we could do. We were confident we could provide rapid ready-to-go cooling in that time.

The Solution

Ready-to-go cooling with 24/7 support

While the mechanical contractor worked on fixing the disabled chiller motor, we concentrated on the details of the temporary package. We brought in our Aggreko Cooling Tower Service (ACTS) team that specialises in improving water performance and reliability in temporary cooling tower installations. On their advice, an extensive range of equipment – including water-cooled chillers, piping, connections, cooling tower water pumps and generators – was brought in and hooked up in a ready-to-go package serviced by 24-hour technical support.

The Impact

Shutdown averted, system adopted as back-up

Within the allotted 48 hours we had the system up and running and had removed the hospital’s reliance on the struggling chiller. By using our ACTS team for project management and cooling tower advice, our customer saved the time, trouble and expense of bringing in an additional contractor. In fact, the technical expertise was so highly regarded that our customer decided to use almost the exact same design for their permanent back-up system.
