Power Generation Using Flare Gas

Turning routine gas flaring into a resilient power source

Turning the Tide on Gas Flaring

In 2024, global flaring climbed to 151 bcm, releasing almost 389 million tonnes of CO₂. While the challenge is worldwide, Africa holds one of the greatest opportunities to flip the script.

Africa’s potential
  • Nigeria and Angola rank among the world’s top ten flarers — but this also means they have some of the biggest opportunities for change.
  • The gas flared in Sub-Saharan Africa could generate power for tens of millions of homes, supporting growth where reliable energy is still in short supply.
  • Instead of waste, flare gas can become a driver of industrialisation and energy security.
The opportunity ahead

By capturing and converting flare gas, African nations and industries can:

  • Accelerate access to power and close energy gaps.
  • Strengthen economies by turning waste into value.
  • Lead on climate action, showing how growth and decarbonisation can go hand in hand.
Innovative flare-to-power solutions

Aggreko's advanced flare-to-power technology transforms wasted gas into valuable energy, addressing environmental and operational challenges:

  • Reduced Emissions: By capturing flared gas, we reduce greenhouse gases.
  • Resource Utilisation: Convert waste into energy, improving efficiency.
  • Energy Access: Provide reliable power in underserved regions at optimal costs.
Challenges in flare gas power adoption

Deploying flare-to-power solutions requires significant infrastructure investment and tackling gas reliability concerns. Without clear incentives, many hesitate, yet the benefits are compelling — including improved energy access and reduced emissions.

Aggreko's Comprehensive Approach, we lead in addressing gas flaring with:

  1. Scalable Solutions: Adaptable systems to match gas supply fluctuations.
  2. Real-time Gas Flaring Analysis: Ensures consistent, qualified gas for power.
  3. Bespoke Engineering: Custom solutions with top-tier safety and reliability.
  4. Challenging Environments Expertise: Proven success across varied climates.
  5. Commercial Flexibility: Offers flexible financing and purchasing options.

Aggreko’s Flare Gas Recovery System

APG volumes can change over a project’s lifetime, and geological study estimates at the feasibility stage are rarely accurate. Thus, our flexible offering is an ideal solution for operators. We can match flare gas availability over the project lifetime and our equipment can be adjusted to match a wide range, including varying gas compositions.

While the quality of some APG can prevent its use directly in our generators – such as high H2S or high-water content or low methane content. In most cases, these can be overcome with our in-house expert application knowledge and sophisticated engineering capabilities.

We can engineer a bespoke solution to match your individual needs and provide full turnkey, dependable solutions while ensuring power reliability and the highest safety standards are maintained.
