Developing our people

Knowledgeable people are at the core of our business and are critical to our success. That's why we invest in developing skills for our business today and tomorrow and attract the trainees who will become our future technicians and managers.  

We use data and technology to give everyone access to learning to continually develop their knowledge and skills. In 2022, our colleagues completed 124,000 hours of training.

Driving employee engagement

Listening to our employees helps us to focus our attention in the areas that matter most. We measure employee engagement annually, reviewing how we are performing and where we can do better.

Health and wellbeing

Mental health training is available to all employees as well as access to confidential free support on topics like nutrition and exercise, financial and legal issues, emotional support and life coaching.

Trainee programmes

Talented individuals are invited onto our growing trainee programmes in many fields of expertise from finance, IT and procurement to engineering. They are supported on the job by experienced industry specialists. Our global trainee programmes help bridge the skills gaps and support training in cleaner technology creating green jobs for the future.

We recognise it takes time and continued focus to achieve a truly diverse and inclusive organisation and are developing an inclusive culture through a framework of common practices which include:

  • Building awareness, confidence and advocacy with out leaders
  • Educating people on inclusion, biases and cultural preferences
  • Embedding inclusion in policies and key people management practices
  • Actively encouraging our people to speak up, share their their experiences and views with the confidence that their voices will be heard
  • Celebrating diversity within our business

Our goal is to increase the diversity of our teams, so they better represent our local communities.

We support UK military veterans through the Armed Forces Covenant, and in 2023 we achieved a silver award in the Defence employer recognition scheme. We also attract ex-military personnel in the US through We Hire Vets and in Australia through the National Veteran's Employment programme.

We review our gender diversity numbers closely and each year we publish our UK Gender Pay Gap report.


Community involvement

As a global business, we can make a positive social impact in our communities. We work closely with local schools, colleges and universities engaging with students and inspiring talent to join our team. 

Our people are encouraged to support their communities too, raising funds or volunteering time through our Days of Difference programme.

Wherever possible we source goods and services from local businesses and suppliers who meet our standards.
