All You Wanted to Know About Battery Storage Systems

A battery energy storage system (BESS) is a technology that allows for the storage of electrical energy in batteries, which can then be used to power electrical loads. BESS can be used for a variety of applications, including grid stabilisation, load shifting, backup power, and integration with renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. BESS typically consists of a battery bank, power conversion systems, and control systems that manage the charging and discharging of the batteries.

Battery storage works by storing electrical energy in batteries for later use. The process involves converting electrical energy into chemical energy that is stored in the batteries and can be converted back into electrical energy when needed.

When electrical energy is supplied to the battery, either from grid, a generator, or a renewable energy source, it charges the battery by causing a chemical reaction that stores the energy in the form of chemical potential energy. The battery can then discharge the stored energy by reversing the chemical reaction and converting the stored chemical energy back into electrical energy.

The process of charging and discharging the battery is controlled by power conversion systems and control systems that manage the flow of energy between the battery and the electrical load. The control system monitors the state of charge of the battery and manages the charging and discharging cycles to optimise the performance and longevity of the battery.

To determine the appropriate size and capacity of a battery storage system for your business needs, take into consideration your daily energy usage, peak power demand, and backup power needs. Battery capacity can be calculated by multiplying energy usage by the backup time required and dividing by the battery voltage and efficiency.

To ensure longevity of BESS, it is recommended to keep their operations within optimal temperature range if possible (between 15 and 35°C) – this can be achieved with cooling systems built in the Batteries.

Monitor system performance for predictive maintenance and early error detection. Aggreko uses ARM (Aggreko remote monitoring system) to keep an eye on operating equipment.

There are several benefits of using battery storage systems for commercial or industrial purposes:

  • Cost savings: Battery storage systems can help commercial and industrial customers save money on their energy bills by reducing peak demand charges and by reducing diesel fuel consumption if operating off grid.
  • Increased reliability: Battery storage systems can provide backup power during outages or other interruptions in the grid, ensuring that critical operations can continue uninterrupted.
  • Reduced emissions: When paired with generators and / or integrated with renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, batteries contribute to reducing usage of fossil fuels and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Improved grid stability: Utilising battery storage can help stabilise the grid by reducing fluctuations in supply and demand, reducing the need for expensive upgrades to the grid infrastructure.

Battery storage combined with renewable energy sources is a great option when the operation requires reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Their performance is not affected by the energy source. However, a backup power generator may be required for additional security of power supply.  Battery storage systems are not to be confused with UPS units.

There are two major types of battery chemistry in modern BESS – Lithium-ion and Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP). Our smaller units, from 45 to 90 kVA, are LFP, which boasts better thermal and structural stability. Larger, 1mW units, utilise lithium-ion technology and have a number of battery protection features, from smart battery management systems (BMS) to built-in HVAC.
