Emergency electrical power for a stranded offshore bulk iron ore carrier

Client: A large shipping company

Location: Western Australia

Sectors: Shipping

The Challenge

A failed generator puts profits on the line

A bulk iron ore carrier was waiting off the coast of Pilbara (Western Australia) when disaster struck.

A vital marine diesel generator broke down. Without it, the ship couldn’t safely enter port to collect its cargo – which left the carrier and its crew stranded.

The crew needed a quick fix. Or the ship would be forced to return to its home port in the Philippines empty-handed.

The Solution

Emergency diesel generators arrive fast

We sprang into action, providing the ship with the emergency diesel generators it needed to reach port safely.

Every hour wasted meant another delay to the ship’s schedule – and more money on the line. So, we had to harness the full power of our fleet, our expertise, and our logistical know-how to get the job done fast.

We provided an on-deck power station consisting of four synchronised 320kVA generators, a cable package, and associated fuel hardware. All delivered via tugboat – and installed by a team of experts, flown in via helicopter to get the equipment running.

Once the power station was in action, the ship had the coverage it needed to reach Port Hedland safely, load, and return to open water.

The Impact

Eight days to a working ship electrical system

It only took eight days to get the vessel back in operation. That’s eight days to find the perfect equipment, transport it offshore over a significant distance, and get it installed on deck.

Coordinating our sales and engineering teams with our technicians, transport team, and external contractors was a major event – and all worth it to get our customer safely into port.
