Aggreko CCUS Rental Pilot Project with ADNOC and FERTI Globe
Client: ADNOC Onshore and Ferti Globe
Location: Abu Dhabi
Sectors: Petrochemical and refining
The Challenge
Achieve sustainability goals of low carbon environment globally and to protect the environment from greenhouse gas emissions
Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) is a state-owned group of energy companies situated in the United Arab Emirates and is one of the largest energy producers in the world, developing a wide range of petrochemical products for global use. Ruwais Fertilizer Industries (FERTIL), a subsidiary of ADNOC, concentrates on using byproducts from major oil fields in the region to manufacture fertilizers for use around the world.
As part of Fertiglobe and ADNOC strategy to explore opportunities in hydrogen and hydrogen carrier fuels such as Blue Ammonia, with the ambition to position the UAE as leader for low-carbon hydrogen. The initiative was taken by Fertil to install a prototype CO2 liquefaction unit, the CO2 was supplied from the recovery unit already installed at Fertil-1 plant. FERTIL approached Aggreko, a reliable partner, one who could provide a predesigned and engineered Pilot Skid.
Project Fact File
The Solution
Creating a scalable pilot project for CCUS through a detailed scoping survey and a successful pilot project
Aggreko joined this project with an existing strong partnership with the customer. A relationship based on mainly enhancing existing industrial applications over the years – now evolving through stronger sustainable practices, complimenting the changing landscape of the energy transition. Always adapting and engineering solutions of success – this project would be no exception.
The blueprint for this project was something that initially did not exist – the only prerequisite was to capture of 1,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide. The project was successfully commissioned by Aggreko Team to recover 1000 MT of Blue Ammonia. The Aggreko CO2 liquefaction unit consisted of VLTCs (very low temperature chillers), heat exchanger and associated cryogenic piping including a specialised maintenance and operations team.
The Impact
Reduction of green house gas emissions by 1500MT of CO2 from the atmosphere
The successful installation of this project places Aggreko in forefront of fast deployable Pilot solutions for rental CCUS projects to align itself with ADNOC’s energy transition strategies. The Pilot Project devised by Aggreko is undoubtedly an important step towards Aggreko’s contribution to UAE’s vision for decarbonisation of its operations that supports the goal to reduce carbon intensity by 25% by 2030 and deliver on its net zero by 2050 ambition.
The project has in turn reflected the reduction of GHG emission by 1500MT of CO2 from the atmosphere.
