Long-term rental power and cogeneration delivers flexibility and savings for brewery

Client: Brewery Martens

Location: Belgium

Sectors: Food and drinks

The challenge

Gain power flexibility and lower dependence on grid

In just 14 years, Brewery Martens’ production has multiplied by ten. With such a vast increase in production comes a similar ramp up in power consumption.

The average energy level required was between three and six Megawatts. However, Brewery Martens’ were restricted to a five-Megawatt electrical connection contract by the grid.

This meant that not only was production hampered in times of high volume, but any future plans for growth would have to be shelved until an adaptable, reliable power solution could be found.

The Solution

Gas power and CHP to deliver flexible energy

How could Brewery Martens keep production on track and also allow for a degree of flexibility under their current power situation? They needed to lower their level of reliance on the grid, so a long-term, rental power package would be ideal – partnering with a company with ample experience.

We worked with our customer to devise a three-Megawatt power solution, comprising of gas generators. This would end the reliance on the grid, without sacrificing reliability.

The benefits didn’t end there either. Our experts included a combined heat and power (CHP) solution within the power package. This would recover the waste heat from our generators and repurpose it for the Cleaning In Place equipment (CIP) and the steam network on site. By using what was essentially a wasted resource, Brewery Martens saved more money through sheer efficiency.

The entire solution was managed by a SCADA system, which allowed remote control and complete vision, so we could respond efficiently to any changes. This digitally optimised package ensured all parts of the package were running optimally and every kilowatt of power was cost-effective - and safe.

The Impact

Emissions and cost savings with full-service contract and CHP

With our equipment and ingenious solution working seamlessly with the production setup of our customer, there was no limit on how far Brewery Martens could aim for in the future.

They could continue to supply their customer base with the highest quality beers, with the heat and power they needed to ensure that standards remained high.

By entering into a full-service contract with Aggreko, Brewery Martens had maintenance and operations of all heat and power solutions taken care of, so they could focus on their core business and enjoy the peace of mind our comprehensive partnership offered. Our customer also saved up to 65,000 Euros per month in comparison to regular methods used previously.

Plus, by using our CHP services, up to 200 tonnes of CO2 was saved, when compared to a conventional solution
