Protecting equipment and operations from a network outage

As the UK continues its journey towards Net Zero by investing in low carbon renewable energy sources, the winds of change are blowing strong. Wind power now contributes to almost a third1 of the UK’s total electricity generation. Keeping the turbines turning is essential.

When a scheduled six-week localised network outage threatened to harm operations at the remote Douglas West Wind Farm in Scotland’s rural South Lanarkshire region, we were challenged to ensure the turbines remained preserved ensuring a smooth transition back into operation after the outage.

The solution would have to be reliable, cost effective and sustainable to reduce environmental impact - and time was not on our side. The remote location and logistics presented unique challenges, while our equipment would have to be robust enough to remain stable providing consistent power with minimal voltage and frequency fluctuations.

Challenge accepted.

The solution

HVO fuelled generators in a battery hybrid system

Our expert team quickly got to work. We needed to provide sustainable power to the turbines to keep the yaw system operational and ensure crucial systems remained in operation to ensure asset integrity. By providing the temporary power needed, we were able to prevent moisture build-up in the electrical components and reduce the threat of long-term damage. 

Our Greener Upgrades provided the perfect package - a fully sustainable hybrid power solution, utilising newer technologies and techniques which lower carbon emissions and provide fuel savings, designed and delivered by us. 

A fleet of battery energy storage systems and HVO generators - powered by hydrotreated vegetable oil biofuel, helped cut global emissions on the project by up to 90%.2 Round the clock Aggreko Remote Monitoring reduced downtime, avoiding unnecessary maintenance in this remote location. While our fuel management services provided essential peace of mind.

Through our Greener Upgrades we were able to offer a total solution – clean, sustainable power to reduce emissions and costs while maximising peace of mind. The remote location and logistics presented unique challenges, while our equipment had to be robust to remain stable providing consistent power with minimal voltage and frequency fluctuations.

Our Greener Upgrades calculator provided a full breakdown of potential emissions savings and fuel savings. While our fuel management services meant we could schedule fuel deliveries to site when required, removing this responsibility from the customer to provide a full turnkey experience.
