Bridging the peak season energy gap for seven Greek islands.

Client: Damco Energy SA

Location: Greek islands

Sectors: Utilities

The Challenge

Providing standby power for Greek islands to withstand summer tourism

The Greek islands of Crete, Lesvos, Santorini, Milos, Rhodes, Ikaria and Karpathos are popular tourist destinations all year round, but especially during the peak summer months from early June to late September. With no connection to Greece’s mainland power grid, higher energy consumption can overwhelm the islands’ small production units, requiring additional supplies to meet the demand.

Damco Energy SA challenged us to identify a solution that would provide up to 16 hours of reliable standby power per day, fully compliant with local environmental regulations. Challenge accepted.

The Solution

150 MW power package with planning, installation, and support

Our experts got to work, using all their expertise in bridging energy gaps in every sector, from renewables to data centres.

There were lots of challenges to overcome. Logistically we would have to ferry and crane temporary power solutions to seven different islands from a main hub in Greece - liaising with local transport partners throughout. Delivery schedules were also staggered, while some islands needed the power from the start of June, others requested it a month later.

We recommended a full turnkey operation – planning, delivery, installation, training and support, working alongside the local energy provider. Delivering efficient generators to provide 150 MW of reliable, efficient power to homes and businesses on the islands.

The Result

Bringing energy certainty to each of the seven islands

Our solution has been a complete success, bridging the gap to bring energy certainty to each of the seven Greek islands during the peak summer months.

‘Tourism is crucial to the local economies of the Greek islands, but a huge influx of visitors puts a big strain on the local energy infrastructure. We were proud to use our expertise and equipment capabilities to bridge the energy gap.’
