The power to help during an emergency
Client: Western Power Distribution (WPD)
Location: Grantham, UK
Sectors: Utilities
The challenge
Quickly restore power to consumers then support repair
More than 13,000 customers were without power after one of WPD’s transformers caught fire. The fire was in the compound and the debris and heat also damaged the neighbouring secondary transformer that was being maintained at the time.
WPD needed power up quickly, then support while it repaired the transformer and brought it back online.

The solution
Power back on quickly then high voltage support for repair phase
We came up with a two-phase plan, power to customers first, then a high voltage power package to get the repair underway.
We immediately installed various sized generators to strategic locations around Grantham so customers weren’t left in the dark.
Then we got our high voltage power package onsite to run in-sync whilst the second transformer was bought back onto the grid.

The impact
Power back on for customers and breathing space to effect a repair
WPD’s 13,000 commercial and residential customers couldn’t be without power for a minute more than necessary, so getting the lights back on was our number one priority. Then we got our HV equipment onsite so the transformer could be fixed and reinstated to the grid.
We scaled our power up and down to meet fluctuating needs in sync with the network, providing a dynamically adjusted baseload grid support package.
