Behind-the-Meter (BtM)
What does "Behind-the-Meter" mean?
Behind the meter refers to an energy related activity that is connected directly into the consumer’s electrical network within or close to their site and independent of grid connected power supply. It can be made up of various distributed energy resources (DERs) including solar, batteries, CHP and wind power – often paired with off-site FoM (Front-of-meter) solutions to meet more of a consumer’s energy requirements. With no grid connection required, projects can be started as soon as planning permission is granted.
Benefits of Behind-the-Meter
- Long-term power price certainty
- A fully funded solution with no upfront capital outlay
- Reduced energy costs –avoided non-commodity charges
- Resilience and security of supply with directly connected generation
- Reduced grid reliance of typically ~20%
Commercial solar and battery
Solar is one of the best sustainable energy sources and is a popular choice for businesses to lower energy costs and reduce carbon footprint.
This behind the meter solution allows businesses with flexibility to generate electricity or heat on-site by utilising their land or even roof-tops for solar panels.
By adding a battery customers can store energy for when it’s needed saving costs.
