A warming lesson in heating historic buildings

Client: St Andrews University

Location: St Andrews, Scotland

Sectors: Facilities management

The challenge

Providing reliable central heating without disrupting students

St Andrews University - one of the UK’s most prestigious universities - needed to upgrade its old and unreliable boiler plant and pipework. Historic buildings needed to continue their research and teaching and there wasn’t a lot of room for temporary equipment.

Project fact file

Distance from boiler packages to colleges 75 m
Number of 250 kW boilers 8
Total heating capacity installed 2,000kW
250 kW - 500 kW Industrial boiler

The solution

Three bespoke heating packages in limited space up to 75m from boiler rooms

We installed four 250 kW boilers 75m from the boiler room serving United College and Irvine Building. Two 50m from the Arts Building’s boiler room and another two served the Neuroscience Building. Here space was at a premium but temperature control was critical as the building housed temperature sensitive facilities. We ran hoses from each temporary set-up to the buildings to deliver the heat and hot water.

The impact

Ideal conditions to keep students and temperature sensitive buildings constant

We installed reliable temporary boilers in three locations. This allowed lectures and research to continue uninterrupted, while the university upgraded its boiler plant and pipework. And we ensured we didn’t take up too much valuable space.

"When we were challenged with implementing our refurbishment programme immediately, we knew from previous experience that Aggreko were able to respond quickly".
