Amrun Project lights up with 20 MW of permanent power

Rio Tinto’s A$2.6 billion Amrun bauxite project on Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland has achieved a significant milestone with permanent power now available from its new Aggreko constructed and operated power station.

The 20 MW Amrun Power Station includes 22 diesel generators and four transformers and is now able to export permanent power to the high voltage network. In the coming months, the facility will power all of Amrun’s mine facilities and associated infrastructure. 

Using the company’s mining sector expertise, Aggreko created a solution which includes engine efficiency upgrades and a heat-recovery system to lower the cost of energy, which will optimise all aspects of the power station.

The 15-year contract at Amrun Power Station is Aggreko’s longest independent power project (IPP) in Australia and includes a five-year option to extend.

Rio Tinto Amrun Project General Manager Marcia Hanrahan said “We are delighted with the expertise and efficiency Aggreko has brought to the delivery of our A$100 million Amrun Power Station. Switching on power at the facility is another important step forward for the Amrun Project.”

Aggreko AusPac Managing Director George Whyte said “I’m incredibly proud of the work our people on the ground in Weipa have achieved to date on the Amrun Project. This achievement was delivered on time and most importantly, in a safe manner with zero injuries.” 

Aggreko has been operating in Australia since 1980. The company employs more than 300 people at 22 locations and has seven depots throughout Australia.

The company was established more than 50 years ago and has grown in experience and expertise in power generation to become the world leader and go-to provider for critical services.

A major part of the company’s business is providing efficient, effective modular power where it is needed across the world, including support to national grids and various industrial applications, such as mining and oil production.
