Cool approach to keeping fruit and vegetables fresh

The challenge
Keeping fruit and vegetables cool during the summer heat
Reynolds takes the quality of its fruit and veg seriously, which means keeping conditions in its packing facility at a constant 4-5⁰C.
And every bit of space is needed for packing, not for bulky temperature equipment. We needed to come up with a plan that didn’t take up valuable floor space but kept produce at the optimum temperature, whatever the weather.

The solution
Low temperature air handlers, a chiller and a generator to power it all
We installed three low temperatures air handlers in the chill store, mounted up on a racking system so they didn’t take up valuable floor space. The air handlers were served by a 400 kW chiller, powered by one of our generators. We installed it in the spring, so it kept Reynold’s fruit and veg cool during the summer warmth. It then acted as back-up over the winter.
The impact
Effective semi-permanent package that provided food for thought
Our installation gave Reynolds the temperatures they needed, while not taking up their valuable packing space. And it was cost effective, as we they could turn it on and off as required, to ensure the temperature inside remained constant, despite the temperature outside. Our chilling package stayed on site for a year, which gave Reynolds plenty of time to consider design options for future permanent cooling equipment.
