Cooling off in Colorado: Powering HVAC for thousands of golf enthusiasts

The mountains, steep terrain, and difficult topography made the BMW Championship a formidable undertaking. Hosted at a new location every year – this time against the beautiful backdrop of Castle Pines, Colorado – the famous tournament needed energy and cooling to provide comfortable climate control for thousands of visitors.

The need for quick turnarounds to support both the BMW Championship and additional on-site events like concerts meant time was of the essence, and any delay could impact the build schedule. Collaboration among our project management team, tournament vendors and WGA operations team was a key aspect to success. This required seamless coordination and collaboration among each team to hit critical handover dates and stay aligned with ever-changing schedules. With little room for error, it was imperative for our team to be flexible in order to execute this complex project.

The Solution

Reliable, innovative solutions for energy and temperature control

We delivered a full-scale power and HVAC solution for the BMW Championship, providing 7.5 MW of energy and 840 tons of cooling.

Our team deployed cutting-edge equipment, including event-specialized AC units and our Tier 4 Final generators – ranging from 60 kW to 300 kW – to optimize efficiency and reduce local emissions with load-on-demand technology. Weeks before the tournament, our team assessed power requirements to determine the energy needs, carefully mapping out 19 miles of cable. It was important these cables would remain hidden in high-traffic areas to preserve event aesthetics. The approach for the HVAC units was the same, ensuring ducts showcased a clean appearance throughout the build.

This meticulous approach and close collaboration with the WGA strengthened our role as a trusted partner, supporting the Evans Scholars Foundation and Military Appreciation Partner position.

The Impact

A successful tournament for Aggreko and WGA

Our solutions delivered a fantastic outcome for the BMW Championship, ensuring a smooth, reliable experience for both organizers and spectators at the event.

By choosing our Tier 4 Final generators, we helped reduce not only emissions but also the WGA’s operational costs. These costs were decreased by optimizing fuel usage and equipment rightsizing from the start. Our expertise in project management, coupled with a flexible approach, ensured that every aspect – from start to finish – was executed seamlessly.

The project was completed on time, within budget, and with adherence to safety protocols, providing the WGA with the reliability they needed for a successful event experience. “The confidence we have in working with Aggreko comes from the fact we know we are working with the best,” said Vince Pellegrino, Senior VP of Tournaments at the WGA.
