Winter-proofing a Colorado O&G facility with Aggreko’s battery energy storage system (BESS)
Client: Colorado O&G facility
Location: Fort Lupton, Colorado, US
Sectors: Oil and Gas
The Challenge
On the search for a winterproof hybrid power system
Facing severe winterization issues in the frigid DJ Basin, the client was grappling with the inefficiencies of their existing generators, specifically two 200 kW units for each site.
During winter, the generators struggled to run efficiently, requiring hours of operation daily, impacting fuel consumption and emitting excess pollutants.
The extremities of the cold – plunging into negative temperatures – took a toll on the generators, resulting in blown engines and operational complications. With multiple sites within the basin, the customer didn’t want to take any chances.
The critical situation prompted the client to seek a robust solution to optimize power supply, reduce downtime, and overcome the limitations of their existing setup. The imminent threat of further engine failures, and the financial implications of prolonged inefficiencies, meant there was a pressing need for a reliable and winter-resistant power generation alternative.
Key Facts
The Solution
Winter-proofing combined with energy transition
The O&G company visited our Pearland facility in Texas to see the variety of Aggreko’s fleet and meet our personnel. Impressed by our service and solutions, the customer chose Aggreko as their energy solution provider. So Aggreko set to work providing a comprehensive solution to the customer’s winterization challenges in the DJ Basin. Implementing parallel setups played a pivotal role in demonstrating the solution’s viability and effectiveness to the client.
Replacing the existing problematic generators, we implemented a state-of-the-art hybrid solution utilizing a 200 kW T4F generator, paired with our brand-new 1 MW battery energy storage unit (BESS). This cutting-edge combination addressed the immediate need for reliable power in freezing conditions and aligned with the client’s green initiatives. Introducing more eco-friendly technologies optimized energy consumption, reduced emissions, and provided a quieter, more reliable alternative. This strategic approach promises a sustainable, long-term energy solution, marking a significant advancement in the client’s power infrastructure.
The Impact
Delivering reliable power in extreme negative weather with modular battery energy storage system
Aggreko’s solution and service has brought transformative results to the project in the DJ Basin, maximizing value for the O&G company. By replacing inefficient generators with advanced diesel generator sets, coupled with the innovative BESS solution, Aggreko has resolved winterization challenges and enhanced operational efficiency.
The optimized energy consumption not only saves on diesel and reduces emissions, but also significantly lowers operational costs. The strategic deployment ensures that generators operate for shorter durations during winter and even less during the summer, providing a substantial reduction in fuel consumption. Beyond simple reliability, the solution showcases Aggreko’s commitment to sustainability, aligning with the client’s green initiatives.
The successful implementation promises a quieter, more reliable, and cost-effective long-term power solution, marking a significant achievement in the client’s energy infrastructure.
