Providing dehumidification to a floating drill rig

Client: Dormac

Location: Cape Town South Africa

Sectors: Oil and Gas

The Challenge

Refurbishing fuel and water tanks during a 14 day refit

Dormac approached Aggreko as they needed a fast solution for a refurbishment project. The project was taking place on an offshore rig during cold conditions in Cape Town. The cold conditions were causing condensation inside all 12 fuel and water tanks. This was preventing resin from drying and ultimately halting the project.

Air ventilation and suitable dehumidification was needed fast. The project was scheduled for completion in 14 days and also had specific requirements regarding equipment being manoeuvrable, as the units were required on the topside deck of the rig.

Key Facts

(30 tonne) air conditioners 4 X 100kW

The Solution

Four 100 kW direct expansion packaged air conditioners

Aggreko quickly drew together a plan that would deliver a suitable solution while meeting the demands of Dormac to ensure that delivery time was met.

Four 100 kW direct expansion packaged air conditioners were taken to the site and installed. Due to their small footprint and mobility advantages, they were installed promptly and were in operation within two days.

The units pushed 100% fresh air at 12 ºC higher temperature into the tanks that needed drying. With 5 m3/s of warm dry air filling the tanks via flexible 500mm ducting, this provided the complete refurbishment. Being ahead of schedule had financial benefits too. The success of this project was down to the expertise from Aggreko and a proven track record of delivering success in the industry. removal of condensation on the inner tank surfaces.

A dry tank meant that the refurbishment could continue and that the resins that were needing to be recoated during the upgrade could dry safely which allowed staff to continue work in the confined space.

The Impact

Twelve internal tanks cleaned and recoated three days ahead of schedule

We were able to dry out the tanks and also ensure that the environment of the workers was safe.

The units did such a good job that the drying time of the project actually was three days ahead of schedule allowing workers more time to focus on other areas of the refurbishment. Being ahead of schedule had financial benefits too.
