There is a paradise island located in the Caribbean that has beautiful reefs, corals, and clear beaches. This island is a popular destination for cruises and for thousands of tourists throughout the year. The utility company on this island faced various challenges in generating the required power and meeting the demand of its population.

The power generation relied on a very inefficient power generation system, and due to this, there were frequent power outages on a daily basis. This situation caused a great deal of damage to electrical equipment on the island, in addition to affecting the quality of life of its inhabitants and tourists. Furthermore, all of this had a significant impact on the island’s economy.

The Solution

Scalable power delivered in different stages: 40 MW initially + 40 MW of expansion + 10 MW new contract

It was important to start generating power as soon as possible. To do so, we successfully mobilized the equipment in no time, fitting them perfectly within a very limited space. At first, we installed a 40 MW generation plant that enabled us to solve the immediate power supply issue on the island. After 6 months in which Aggreko generated approximately 25% of the island’s power, the client decided to request an additional 40 MW of expansion for a total installed capacity of 80 MW. We installed the equipment in a period of less than 2 months, meeting the expectations of the customer. Later, the client requested a new expansion of an additional 10 MW, which brought the total installed capacity to 90 MW.

That same year, some of the installed equipment began to be used as spinning reserve so that any change in the power demand could be handled quickly. Once more, we adapted to our customers needs, helping them to overcome their challenges. More than a service provider, Aggreko has become an important partner for its clients: meeting the short installation deadlines for numerous pieces of equipment in a challenging space, providing the option to adapt the power supply according to demand, and providing flexibility in contract duration.

We were able to deliver and install our mobile, modular equipment in a notoriously short period of time. With the support of the 90 MW of power that we supply, the island has managed to avoid any power outages that would negatively affect its people and tourists.

Generation costs have been reduced thanks to the reduction in fuel consumption using more efficient equipment. Both the island’s citizens and its tourism industry have benefited from having a reliable power system that not only generates power 24/7, but also do so according to the required demand.
