The challenge
Utility constraints threatening commissioning and speed-to-market
Facing extended utility grid delays, a hyperscale data center risked missing critical commissioning milestones and delaying operations. Aggreko delivered a 60 MW turnkey temporary power solution with built-in redundancy, advanced fuel management, and real-time system control. The engineered approach enabled on-schedule commissioning, protected return on investment, and established a repeatable model for hyperscale development under grid constraints.
Utility constraints threatening commissioning and speed-to-market
Turnkey, engineered temporary power at hyperscale scale
Protecting ROI while maintaining project momentum
The hyperscale facility was construction-ready, but permanent utility power was unavailable due to extended grid lead times. Without power, the site could not complete commissioning or progress toward operations, placing speed-to-market, revenue timelines, and return on investment at risk.
In the hyperscale data center market, delays at this stage can result in significant financial exposure, including prolonged construction costs, liquidated damages, and reputational impact. With grid constraints becoming increasingly common across North America, the customer required a rapid, large-scale solution capable of delivering utility-grade reliability without compromising uptime, resiliency, or sustainability requirements.
Aggreko designed and deployed a 60 MW temporary power solution to bridge the gap until permanent utility service became available.
The system utilized tier 4 final 1,200 kW twin-pack generators configured in 40 MW blocks, delivering continuous power with N+2 redundancy across generation, transformation, and distribution.
The scope included medium-voltage distribution, a comprehensive fuel management system, and 24/7 on-site operations and maintenance. A SCADA-based control system enabled real-time plant management and controlled ramp-up and ramp-down, while Aggreko Remote Monitoring supported load profiling, preventative maintenance, and performance reporting throughout the six-month deployment.
Aggreko’s temporary power solution enabled the facility to commission within the customer’s tolerance window, preserving speed-to-market and avoiding extended construction delays.
The power plant achieved 99.1% uptime, meeting the resiliency expectations required for hyperscale operations.
Rapid mobilization and efficient demobilization supported a smooth transition into the next phase of construction. Beyond this project, the engineered design created a scalable, repeatable temporary power model that can be deployed across future hyperscale developments facing similar utility constraints.
