The Challenge

A decentralized power approach, with separate power generation and dual supply at each site across a midstream operation, led to higher fuel costs, complex permitting, and limited visibility

Midstream operations are inherently complex, with critical equipment and pumping stations often spread across vast distances. When fueled via virtual pipeline, where gas or liquids are transported without continuous physical infrastructure, powering multiple remote sites can be especially demanding.

Traditionally, customers relied on separate generators stationed at different points along the operation. While effective, that decentralized model created challenges: multiple air permits, higher fuel logistics costs, and increased maintenance demands. Managing reliability and load balance across so many distributed power nodes also introduced operational inefficiencies and limited oversight.

Recognizing an opportunity to streamline power delivery, Aggreko proposed a more innovative, integrated approach, one that would consolidate generation, enhance reliability, and reduce total cost of ownership, while maintaining the flexibility required for field-based midstream applications.

The Solution

Aggreko delivered seamless, efficient power from one hub

Aggreko engineered and deployed a microgrid power system tailored specifically for a midstream site in the Permian Basin. The solution combines five 1500 kW natural gas generators, delivering a total of 7.5 MW of centralized power capacity.

Engineering a centralized power hub

Running on compressed natural gas (CNG), the generators provide a cleaner, lower-emission energy source while eliminating the need for frequent diesel deliveries. This not only reduces operating costs but also simplifies logistics across remote areas of the pipeline.

This configuration serves as a bridge power solution, connecting multiple areas of the operation to one dependable energy source. Instead of running several smaller systems across the field, all power generation is now condensed into a single hub, greatly simplifying operations and permitting. With all emissions tied to one site, the customer benefits from a streamlined air permitting process and more predictable compliance management.

Reliability through intelligent design

A smaller natural gas generator provides start-up power and maintains the system’s resilience during transitions. The microgrid also incorporates advanced electrical distribution and control equipment that manages power flow across the network. Designed with built-in redundancy, the configuration ensures uninterrupted energy delivery even if one generator is offline for service.

To further enhance reliability and performance, the customer is supported by Aggreko Remote Monitoring (ARM), providing 24/7 insight into generator health, load balance, and system efficiency. Through ARM, Aggreko’s operations team can make real-time adjustments, anticipate maintenance needs, and ensure consistent uptime for all connected loads.

The Impact

The centralized system delivered a more innovative solution for the customer’s operation

The centralized microgrid transformed the customer’s midstream power strategy, delivering measurable improvements in efficiency, reliability, and sustainability. By consolidating power generation into one high-capacity hub fueled by CNG, the customer reduced costs, simplified compliance, and improved overall system visibility.

Beyond the operational benefits, this project represents a step forward in innovation: a model for how microgrid can enhance both sustainability and performance. By consolidating power, Aggreko delivered a solution that is smarter, cleaner, and more resilient, helping the customer meet evolving energy demands with confidence.

Key outcomes include:

  • Permitting costs and reduced emissions, with all air quality requirements consolidated under one site
  • Lower fuel and logistics expenses, through optimized load management and fewer delivery points
  • Enhanced reliability and uptime, driven by built-in redundancy and 24/7 remote monitoring
  • Streamlined operations, with centralized control over multiple pipeline loads
  • Increased efficiency through optimized generator loading and reduced maintenance frequency
