THE CHALLENGE
Inject power into the national grid affected by declining reservoir levels.
In Costa Rica, during the El Niño phenomenon, the country faces energy challenges intensified by low water levels in hydroelectric sources.
This phenomenon led to a significant drop in the reservoirs of several hydro plants, seriously affecting the country’s energy matrix, which relies 72% on hydro sources for its total energy supply.
THE SOLUTION
Deployment of a thermal power plant.
Our solution involved installing a 105 MW thermal power plant designed to meet growing demand during the summer season.
At Aggreko, we are committed to driving business growth and addressing electrical challenges, turning them into opportunities for national development and progress. We not only ensure a reliable energy supply, but also optimize efficiency in critical operations.
THE IMPACT
We ensured an uninterrupted energy supply during the dry season.
Through the implementation of this energy solution, we were able to mitigate the negative effects of unavoidable climate phenomena and maintain reliable energy generation to meet the country's demand and avoid power rationing.
The installation of the thermal plant and the diversification achieved through our energy sources resulted in 0% interruptions during the dry season. This allowed thousands of people to maintain access to electricity and enabled businesses and industries to continue operating, helping sustain the country's economy.
With this project, we not only contributed to Costa Rica’s economic development but also set a benchmark in the region for addressing energy challenges with reliable, sustainable, and flexible solutions.
