Stand-by
The Challenge
Attend unexpected power blackouts around the country in a matter of hours
During this period, some regions in the interior of the country started increasing their power consumption. The decline of investment, especially in the distribution and transmission infrastructure caused by a longlasting tariff freeze, began to be reflected in widespread power shortages throughout the country.
Because of the uncertainty about where and when the next failure could occur, ENARSA requested a mobile solution, flexible and modular enough to be deployed and connected within 12 hours to attend the points of failure of the power system. This time could vary based on the distance from the base.
Aggreko was selected to provide up to
- 270 MW of energy, totaling 49% of the capacity requested by ENARSA
- The equipment had to be stationed in 4 operational bases in different regions
- 2,780,400 km2, 5 times the area of France, to service the entire country
The Solution
270 MW of mobile fleet ready to provide support to the power grid whenever and wherever needed
Aggreko engineered a ready-to-go solution installing the generators in trailers, ready to be rapidly deployed and generating in less than 12 hours from the moment the order would be given to attend scheduled or unscheduled outages. This time could vary depending on the distance between the bases and the point of the failure. Our solution featured packaged generation around 1 MW (including fuel storage). A fleet of 292 diesel generators totaling 270 MW prepared to operate in baseload or island modes, was set up to support the grid during emergency and transmission problems.
The flexibility and rapid response to quickly increase or decrease the capacity and energy output based on customer´s needs and immediate availability of our equipment, the experience we have in dealing with this type of emergency solutions and the highly trained and qualified technical team, were key differentiators that made Aggreko the right choice for an award of 49% of the energy needed for Argentina. All the units were being remotely monitored 24 hours a day by the Argentina Operations Center (COA). This service provided the customer with the necessary information to improve the operation by:
- Reducing operational costs
- Performing statistical analysis to prevent failures
- Managing fuel logistics
Eventually, most of the stand-by units were relocated to the metropolitan area of the Great Buenos Aires to ensure the supply of energy in the capital city and its surroundings.
The Impact
Reliable power supporting the development of the provinces around the country
The city of Buenos Aires and the interior provinces could thrive with a constant and reliable power source whenever and wherever was needed. The solution provided by Aggreko lasted 7 years and offered power around the clock as power outages became less frequent. An effective partnership between Aggreko and the Argentinian power authorities helped boosting the local economy and the rapid development of the regions.
